Maurice reviews the site at Common Field
Liberal Democrat Councillor Maurice Homewood reports - The unwelcome prospect of sand extraction from the Common Field in Betchworth took a leap nearer when Surrey County's Planning Committee gave its permission at its December meeting.
At the time of writing, the decision whether to allow quarrying to begin in ten years' time or to call the matter in now for a Public Inquiry is in the hands of Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
CAMEL (Campaign Against Mineral Extraction and Landfill), having seen its case against the proposal swept aside in December, is doing all it can to bring about a Public Inquiry. "I wrote to ask for an inquiry," says Maurice "and I hope very many residents did the same!"
