All records of routine maintenance tasks undertaken by Surrey Highways services have been lost. These jobs included the regular grass cutting and hedge trimming which are so important in a rural area and formed the specifications for the work gangs.
Local parish councils have been asked to remind Surrey Highways what tasks they have agreed to undertake. Surrey's own records were lost as they shed staff following the Tory Business Delivery Review (BDR) carried out in 2006.
David Preedy - LibDem campaigner and a parish councillor in Headley - says: "First the BDR got rid of experienced Highways staff who understood the local needs. Without Surrey setting priorities, the performance of the contractors deteriorated; so Surrey had to hire more people, who now need time to build up experience. Now we find out that they didn't keep any records of what work they were meant to be doing."
