Mole Valley Council has approved a motion proposed by Lib Dem Councillor Stephen Cooksey to establish an Action Group of the Executive, Dorking Councillors and local organisations to consider ways in which the Council can help Dorking town centre overcome its present economic problems.
Stephen Cooksey said "Dorking Councillors have been demanding action for a number of years. At last the Council has agreed that action is necessary if Dorking is to retain its viability as a market town and its place as the primary shopping location of southern Mole Valley. The current situation is having a serious effect on Dorking town centre - including an increasing number of empty shop units. The Council must take the lead in tackling this situation.
"Much improvement work is needed to enhance the town's environment and to support local traders. The Action Group will have authority to move quickly to implement agreed recommendations and the Council is committed to seek the necessary funding.
"There are plenty of ideas from Dorking Councillors and willing participation by concerned local organisations. What has been lacking is positive action by the Council administration. Hopefully this is now a major step in the right direction."
