CAB demonstration Leatherhead

Supporters of the CAB demonstrate in Leatherhead earlier this year

In this year's initial District Council budget the Conservatives proposed to cut CAB funding by £10,000 in 2009-2010, by £20,000 in 2010-2011 and to evict the service from its present accommodation in Leatherhead. After intensive campaigning by Liberal Democrats and supporters of the CAB, including the presentation of petitions, the Conservatives backed down by withdrawing the proposed cut for 2009-2010.

Now they have conceded further by agreeing to an index-linked grant of £126,000 each year for the next three years (up £5,000 from this year). They are still intent on withdrawing the funding which helps to retain the service in its present Leatherhead premises but there is hope for an acceptable solution to this issue.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Bridget Lewis-Carr said "This is another example of what can be achieved by effective public action."
