At the September meeting of Mole Valley District Council, the Conservatives proposed changes which would have centralised even more power in the hands of the Executive. Independent councillors joined the Liberal Democrats in opposing these proposals. As a result, parish councils and small groups of objectors both retain their right to ask for planning decisions to be taken to Committee for public discussion. This will help people in rural areas oppose unwanted developments.
Local campaigner David Preedy said: "As Chair of Headley Parish Council, I know how much unpaid effort our councillors put into reviewing planning applications. I am delighted that we have retained the right to demand open discussion on key planning applications."
