Stephen Cooksey looks forward to a colourful Dorking this year
Hanging baskets are to be re-introduced into Dorking town centre this year following an initiative from Dorking and Holmwoods County Councillor Stephen Cooksey. A combination of Surrey County Council funding and money contributed by local businesses and retailers will support the project.
Stephen Cooksey said "It is really encouraging to see the enthusiasm with which this project has been greeted. I am very grateful to the retailers and business leaders who have agreed to give financial support. This is a genuine partnership with the town centre community which will bring much needed colour and sparkle back to Dorking this summer.
"Following Mole Valley Council's decision to abandon hanging baskets last year there was real disappointment that the town centre did not look its best whilst the centres of Reigate, Epsom and Guildford were ablaze with colour from their flower displays.
"There are 72 sites which have been used previously, mostly on lighting columns. We hope that most, if not all, of these can be used for hanging baskets this year.
"I am sure that residents and visitors alike will be pleased to see Dorking town centre blooming again this summer and everyone will enjoy the much more pleasant environment this will create."
