Lib Dems Launch Petition to Keep Dorking’s Recycling Centre Open

November 19, 2018 3:24 PM

ranmore road tipMole Valley Liberal Democrats have launched a petition to keep Dorking's Community Recycling Centre ("Tip") at Ranmore Road open.

This follows the decision by Conservative-run Surrey County Council to consult on three options covering the future of Surrey's Community Recycling Centres - all of which involve closing the Dorking Tip.

Liberal Democrat County Councillor Hazel Watson said, "Closing Dorking's busy Community Recycling Centre is a betrayal of Mole Valley residents. Our environment will suffer because residents will have to make longer trips to recycle their waste, and there will inevitably be more fly-tipping for local landowners to clear up.

"I urge local residents to sign our petition, which can be found at www.mvld.org.uk/DorkingTip, to keep the Dorking CRC open and, preferably, to increase the number of days it is open to seven days a week."

The County Council's decision to consult on closing the Tip comes just a year after the last consultation which proposed a similar outcome … a proposal that was overwhelmingly rejected by residents who, through the number of representations made, forced the County Council to back down and keep the Tip open three days a week.

Liberal Democrat County Councillor Stephen Cooksey said, "The Conservatives' claim that Dorking is one of Surrey's 'less busy' recycling centres is simply a function of their decision earlier this year to close the site for four days a week.

"Whenever I have used the tip, it has always been very busy indeed.

"The County Council should be making it easier, not more difficult, for local residents to dispose of their waste."
