Launching the Liberal Democrats campaign for the 2018 District Council elections in Mole Valley, Group Leader Stephen Cooksey outlined the following priorities.

  • Protect the Green Belt and rural areas beyond the Green Belt from inappropriate development;
  • Only consider developments on Green Belt land that no longer serves Green Belt purposes and where there is local support;

Build housing that local people need manifesto housing

  • Prioritise the provision of social housing for local people to rent;
  • Promote building smaller homes that local people can afford;
  • Challenge unsustainable housing development targets

Implement green energy policies manifesto green

  • Promote energy saving policies such as solar power and insulation;
  • Invest in the use of electric vehicles and in more charging points;
  • Use planning policies to apply green principles to developments.

  • Give priority to residents' views in the Local Plan;
  • Improve staffing for Development Control and Planning Enforcement;
  • Ensure that Community plans are respected and implemented.

  • Develop fair parking charging for residents, retailers and workers;
  • Extend the free 30 minutes parking scheme to all Council car parks;
  • Work urgently with the County to fix the problems with our roads.

Encourage job creation by promoting local business ventures;

Provide starter units for small and expanding businesses;

Promote our town centres as places for retail and leisure.

Restore democracy to council decisions

  • Involve all Councillors in decision making;
  • Make consultation effective by taking action on the views expressed;
  • Ensure greater transparency in Council decision making.
