The new Local Plan protects the Green Belt and Mole Valley's unique character

In 2017, the then Conservative administration called for sites in the Green Belt to be brought forward for Green Belt at Headleydevelopment. As a result the 2020 consultation included significant site allocations in the Green Belt.

Since then the Liberal Democrat Administration has introduced stricter criteria over what land can be taken out of the Green Belt and we have increased the scale of development on brownfield land.

This has cut the area of Green Belt land made available for development by 44% (to well under 1% of the total) and the amount of development on brownfield sites has increased from 29% to 51%.

In some areas, such as Bookham, Fetcham and Leatherhead, we've reduced the target for building on the Green Belt from nearly 1,400 to less than 300 homes.

We have also tightened up the requirements associated with each of the allocated sites, such as protecting key trees and mature hedges, providing enhanced primary care facilities, protecting heritage assets and avoiding worsening local traffic congestion.
