Government cancels Surrey elections

Conservatives at Surrey Council and the Labour Government have agreed to cancel democracy in Surrey this year.
For decades, the Conservatives running Surrey County Council have let us down, and they’ve left us in a mess. Now, in a desperate bid to cling on to power, they have agreed a deal with the Labour Government to cancel this year’s County Council elections while they stitch-up a reorganisation of local government here.
Labour wants to reorganise local government and, they say, they want to devolve power to the regions across England. Liberal Democrats agree, but not at the expense of local democracy.
The Conservatives don’t have a mandate from voters for this. Their time is up and people across Surrey are telling us they want change.
Chris Coghlan MP said, “Since 2021, Surrey has been shifting from Blue to Yellow. The Lib Dems now control or are the biggest party in 6 of 11 District and Borough Councils, and in last July’s general election, we gained 6 Surrey MPs. The Conservatives no longer represent the majority of Surrey’s residents. If you’re as angry about their shocking tactics as I am, write to me at chris@dorkinghorleylibdems.org.uk.”
