At the December meeting of Mole Valley District Council, a Liberal Democrat motion opposing Surrey's plan to close the Dorking Recycling Centre was passed unanimously. As a result the Council has committed to take various steps to oppose the closure, including replying in the strongest terms to the consultation, and working with the County Council to discuss positive options to keep the Dorking tip open.

The Council will also be writing to local MPs requesting their support for a proper Local Government funding settlement for Surrey which reduces the need for this type of unsustainable cut.

The motion was proposed by Stephen Cooksey and seconded by David Draper. It was triggered by the current wave of "consultations" launched by Tory-controlled Surrey County Council as it struggles to make £85 million of further savings.

All three of Surrey Conservatives' proposals for Community Recycling Centres involve the closure of the Dorking centre, which was only rescued from closure in 2017 following widespread local opposition, again led by local Liberal Democrat Councillors.

A petition opposing the current plans to close the Dorking CRC has attracted over 800 signatures.
