September update from the Cabinet Member for Climate Change
As your Climate Change Cabinet Member, I am making sure lots is going on:
The 24th September is the first day of The Great Big Green Week, which runs until 2nd October. Mole Valley District Council is supporting this by asking our residents to make a pledge. The pledge will be for 2 months. It could be pledging to reuse a bottle or cup instead of using disposable ones, to pledging to share lifts with other parents or colleagues.
The 24th September 9.30am-3.00pm, is also the day Circular Dorking is to be launched in St Martin's Walk, Dorking. As a member of the Steering Group, I'm really pleased to tell you loads of local businesses, who are already doing so much to mitigate climate change and create a sustainable circular economy, will have their stalls out during the day. Please come along and find out what they are doing and intend to do. See what you can take part in too.
They will be holding events to raise money including a Quiz at Rialto, South St, Dorking on October 3rd at 7pm with tickets from hello@circulardorking.org.uk
Apropos of this, here's a really clear image of how to deal with what you may think is:
Recycling
We all know how important reusing and recycling is. Personally, I darned 20 pairs of socks recently. They don't look that beautiful, but no-one sees the toes where the holes were, and I saved myself a fortune!
I thought you'd be interested in seeing how you can recycle in Mole Valley, of course, this is just a reminder for most of you:
What goes in your green bin… | Bring Site/Alternative Recycling | DON'T RECYCLE |
Glass | Compost organic waste at home (food and garden) | Cardboard stained/dirty with foodstuffs, grease, paint or dirt in your general waste bin; this cannot be recycled |
Paper and Cardboard (flattened) | Hard plastics; such as Tupperware, toys and kitchen utensils | Remove any tape and polystyrene inserts and put them in your general rubbish bin |
! Plastic bottles, pots, tubs & trays | Plastic bags, cellophane and black bin bags | Food waste |
Metal food tins and drinks cans | Crisp packets, wrappers and food pouches (such as pet and baby food pouches) | Tissues, wipes and tissue paper |
Clean aluminium foil and trays | Batteries/electronics | Aerosols |
If you have more than will fit in your recycling bin, flatten it, tie it into a bundle and place it next to your recycling bin for collection. Please note we can only accept clean and dry cardboard. If you wish, you can place it into a clear recycling sack to keep it dry | Clothes/Shoes | Nappies |
Medical Waste |
Let's carry on the good work!
Thank you to everyone,
Claire Malcomson
