Lib Dems oppose Tory move to cancel elections
With so much going wrong with Surrey County Council - from terrible failings in child safeguarding and Special Educational Needs, to our perennially potholed roads - residents deserve the opportunity to hold “the powers that be” to account. Yet Surrey County Council's Conservative leaders are proposing that the County Council elections, due in May 2025, be cancelled.
The risk of cancellation has been raised by the Government's proposals for reform of Local Government. The Government has suggested that areas that have local agreement to implement these changes rapidly could postpone the elections due this May.
Surrey's Conservative leaders have suggested that they will recommend this to the Government at an Emergency Council meeting on 8th January. The Government has indicated it will make a decision later in January.
