Charles Engel is the District Council candidate for Capel, Leigh & Newdigate in this May's local elections. He has lived in Newdigate for 16 years and is keen to bring his experience and interests to a community role. Originally from Hertfordshire, Charles trained and worked as a dairyman so he truly appreciates the concerns of rural communities.

His main career has been craft-based, as a conservator of fine furniture and wood. Now semi-retired, Charles works part-time for the Royal Mail so he really knows his way around the local area and he has time available to help the local community. Having served as a union representative, he has both listening skills and the ability to negotiate. Added to his natural empathy with people, these would be useful talents for liaising between residents and various authorities.

As an enthusiastic equestrian he has been involved in local riding clubs and point-to-point and has, in the past, volunteered with a group of walkers and riders to help improve the state of footpaths, bridleways and general ecology.

Living in Newdigate, Charles is aware of the problems that speeding can bring to our villages and would be keen to campaign for safer streets. He has even taken part in the speed gun training course with the Surrey Police. He also knows it is vital to the future of our local communities to have more affordable homes for young families as well as support to encourage a thriving rural economy.
